European Greetings Pray For EuropeInformation from Operation World © 2001 Albania was a Communist country until 1990 but it wasn't until 1998 that religious freedom was provided. Communism has taken a toll economically and spiritually in the nation. The 1990's saw an influx of missionaries both Muslim and Christian but most are short term workers. Pray for long term missionaries and good Biblical training of leaders. England, now known as the United Kingdom, has religious freedom and is 68% Christian. Pray for revival in the nation as "tolerance" is undermining the spiritual strength. Most Christians now believe that the UK itself is a mission field. Germany has religious freedom but there is an underlying sense of hostility to Christianity. Only about 8%, of the 70% of people claiming to be Christians, attend worship regularly. Pray for Christian education and spiritual blindness to be removed. Hungary celebrated 1000 years of Christianity in the year 2000. During those years, Catholicism and Communism ruled for awhile. In 1990 religious freedom prevailed. Suspicion, mistrust and division are lingering results of Communism. Pray for social and spiritual stability within the nation and church. Italy's Christians are 80% Catholic. The country has had great cultural/spiritual influence thought the ages. Pray that there will be an increase in spiritual hunger among the people, especially the young. Pray also that the young will be raised up into places of leadership. Netherlands has freedom of religion but that "freedom' also encompasses many alternative lifestyles. The church is in decline. Young people consider the church as irrelevant. Pray for the young to find 'The Truth' for the questions they are asking. Norway considers the Lutheran Church as the official State Church. They have a rich spiritual heritage yet only a few are active within the church. Pray for revival and a increase in leadership committed to a strong Biblical foundation. Russia's Orthodox Church survived Communism and is still the symbol of Russian identity. The Russian Church has seen the most lengthy and severe persecution. The past has influenced the future and lack of Godly training is evident. Pray for a good strong Biblical teaching foundation to build upon. Sweden until 2000 considered the Lutheran Church as the state church and it still holds an important role within the nation. The spiritual atmosphere in the nation is declining as tolerance is promoted. Pray for good Biblical training without the influence of humanism. Also pray for the youth who are growing up without the influence of the Gospel. Switzerland guarantees religious freedom in their constitution but the local government also have a large say in the religion of their area. Pray for a renewed vision withing the nation; for unity, missions, and Godly leadership. Ukraine was controlled by Communism until 1990. They had a rich Christian heritage until the Communist took over. The Christian grew strong during 130 years of persecution but the scars remain. Pray for restoration and reconciliation, and good Biblical training. |
